Granuaile was a modification of the original board game Monopoly, created by a group of classmates and myself in order to challenge our ability to understand game rules and tweak them in order to make them more interesting.

We came up with a property-centric game themed around Medieval Irish pirates. This was primarily inspired by the ancestry of our team member Timothy J. Liedel, and we built mechanics around this idea by allowing players to amass not merely an empire but also an army and a garrison, and revolves around destroying opposing players using a cannon.

This project taught us all lessons in understanding group dynamics, communication and disagreeing on the core of the design. We went from a game with Warhammer-like mechanics to Candyland-like race to the finish games until we arrived at our final build.

As mentioned by Jon Chung in his own portfolio site, Granuaile was featured in an article for Game Career Guide about what one should put in their game design portfolios, written by Brenda Brathwaite.
